The FBI reports that in 2021, there were over 92,000 victims with $1.7 Billion Dollars in losses sustained as a result of the so called Grandparent Scam. With Telephone Tae Kwon Do©2021HBM, I can show you how to develop skills that you can effectively use to protect yourself against the Grandparent Scam and even possibly overpower the scammer.
The Grandparent Scam is a criminal enterprise wherein a scammer contacts the prospective victim pretending to be the victim’s granddaughter or grandson. The scammer, after falsely identifying as the grandson or granddaughter, advises the prospective victim that they are in a world of hurt and if they do not immediately receive a certain sum of money, the world will come to an end. During the conversation the scammer then attempts to make arrangements with the victim to transfer the money. With the simple use of Telephone Tae Kwon Do©2021HBM, over 92,000 victims potentially could have saved $1.7 Billion Dollars. It is just that simple and effective.
Before I get into the system, please allow me to share two telephone conversations that I personally experienced and how I handled them.
My home telephone rang.
HBM (That’s me – Howard B. Mitz): Hello
Scammer (Young girl’s voice, no trace of accent, but in distress): Grandpa?
HBM: Who is this?
Scammer: This is your Granddaughter.
HBM: Sabrina? (Please note that I do not have a granddaughter named Sabrina. I just made up a name.)
Scammer: Yes, this is Sabrina. (Gotcha, Ms. Scammer!)
HBM: Hi Sabrina. It’s great to hear from you! How are you doing?
Scammer: I am doing terrible Grandpa, because I am in big trouble and need $5,000 immediately or I am going to jail for ten years or more. Please held me or my life will be over. I love and need you so much!
HBM: Look, Sabrina. Last year I loaned you $3,000 and you swore, under oath, that you would pay me back within a couple of weeks. It has now been eight months. Where is my money!
Scammer: (Audible gasp and the line went dead.)
Here is what transpired during the second telephone call.
My home telephone rang.
HBM: Hello
Scammer: Grandpa? (Young man’s voice, no accent, in distress)
HBM: Who is this?
Scammer: This is your Grandson.
HBM: Scottie, is that you. (I don’t have a grandson named Scottie)
Scammer: Yes, Grandpa. This is your Grandson, Scottie (Gotcha, Mr. Scammer)
HBM: Scottie, great to hear from you. How are you doing?
Scammer: Not good at all, Grandpa. I was in a terrible car accident and need $5,000 for an attorney.
HBM: Scottie, where are you now?
Scammer: I am in Chicago and I called a lot of attorneys, but they are all so very expensive. This attorney is the cheapest and I have to be in court tomorrow. So I really need the money right this minute. Please help me, Grandpa. I love you so very much and you have never let me down.
HBM: Scottie, you are in luck. I have a very good friend who is an attorney in Chicago and I am certain that he can help you.
Scammer: (Hung up!)
